Three ideas for a day out for your trip

Colmar and the Wine Route villages
Colmar has several markets within walking distance of each other, including the one in Little Venice, in a pedestrian old town. You can carry on to Kaysersberg, Riquewihr or Eguisheim: wine-growing villages with no station, where the car parks fill up early.
An evening in Strasbourg
The Christkindelsmärik has been running since 1570. Around ten markets fill the Grande Île, with the big tree on Place Kléber. The centre is restricted and parking is near impossible during the season: with a driver, you arrive and leave without hunting for a space.
The Ribeauvillé medieval market
Just two weekends in December, with huge crowds. A driver drops you as close as possible and waits: you are not dependent on coaches, which are rare and stop early in the evening, nor on a parking space you will not find.

Why a driver rather than your car or the train

In December, darkness falls around 5 pm and the lights come on in the late afternoon. It is often the most beautiful moment, and also the one when people head home. With a driver, you stay to the end without watching the time of the last train or worrying about the tired drive back.

Let us be honest: from Basel, a direct regional train reaches Colmar in about 45 minutes. For a visit to Colmar alone, as a couple, during the day, the train is a good option and costs less. A driver makes sense for something else: stringing together several villages with no station, travelling as a group or with family, coming back late after the lights, and letting everyone enjoy a mulled wine.

You build the programme with us, and the price is confirmed before departure. A saloon for up to 4 passengers or a van for up to 7, a heated premium vehicle, waiting time included at every stop. The all-in day package lasts 8 hours; a travel supplement applies, because the vehicle comes from Alsace, and it is higher from Zurich than from Basel or Freiburg.

Practical info

Frequently asked questions before you book

How long does it take from Zurich to the Alsace Christmas markets?

Allow about 1 hr 45 from Zurich to Colmar and about 2 hr 30 from Zurich to Strasbourg. On an all-in 8-hour day, that leaves time for a market or two villages, and you are back in the evening at Zürich HB, your hotel or your home.

Train or driver: which should I choose?

From Basel, the direct regional train takes about 45 minutes to Colmar. For a visit to Colmar alone, as a couple, during the day, the train is a good option and costs less. A driver becomes worthwhile if you want to string together several villages with no station, travel as a group, come back late after the lights, or enjoy a mulled wine without worrying about the wheel.

What can I bring back to Switzerland, and what does customs say on the way back?

Take your ID with you. On your return to Switzerland, the customs allowances apply to your purchases: value of goods, alcohol, meat. The amounts and conditions are set by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (OFDF): check its official website before you leave.

Can we visit several markets in a single day?

Yes. Allow an hour to an hour and a half in each village; Colmar or Strasbourg can easily fill half a day on their own. From Basel or Freiburg, three stops fit into a day. From Zurich, the drive takes longer: two stops are more comfortable.

How far in advance should I book?

For a Saturday or Sunday in December, several weeks ahead, especially during the two weekends of the Ribeauvillé medieval market: those are the most requested days. On weekdays, a few days is usually enough, and the markets are more pleasant.

Can you pick us up at Basel, Zurich or Freiburg station?

Yes: at Basel SBB, at Zürich HB or at Freiburg Hbf, just as at your home or your hotel. You return to the same place in the evening, at the time agreed with your driver.

What our clients say

Hubert with Elsass VTC helped give me the most magical day in France! He was prompt, professional, informative about the area, and suggested other towns to visit based on my time schedule. Hubert made sure I arrived to reservations on time, helped find them, and gave me alloted times for each stop. AND if I was not back, he was contacting me to make sure I found my way back to the vehicle. He provided water, sanitizing wipes, and even gave me some videos and pictures as souvenirs! I not only felt like I had a Chauffeur and body gaurd for the day, but friend. I will definitely be back for another adventure! Thank you so much, Hubert & Elsass VTC ✨️
