The castle is partly carved into the rock. It measures about 90 metres long and 30 metres high, which gives it the shape of a ship.

Rooms and galleries were hewn directly into the sandstone, including the prison. The visit takes place inside the walls, at your own pace.
The Barons of Fleckenstein
The castle is documented as early as 1165. The Fleckenstein family held it for centuries, until the male line died out in 1720.
1689: the dismantling
The fortress was destroyed in 1689, under Louis XIV, and was not rebuilt. Its ruins have been listed as a historic monument since 1898.
