There is no direct train between Strasbourg and Zurich. Here is how the journey actually works by train.
For a single traveller with little luggage, during the day, to the centre of Zurich, the train remains cheaper. The driver makes sense for early morning flights or late evening returns, families, groups, heavy luggage and business appointments with a same-day return.
For a 7 am flight to Zurich-Kloten, you need to be at the terminal around 5 am. Departure from Strasbourg is therefore around 2.15 to 2.30 am, to absorb the drive and keep a margin.
No train allows this timing: the first departure from Strasbourg is around 5.20 am. This is one of the cases where the driver makes the most sense, along with late evening returns, families, groups and heavy luggage.

There is no direct train: regional train from Strasbourg to Basel in 1 hr 15 to 1 hr 30, a change of 20 to 30 minutes, then a Swiss train to Zürich HB in around 55 minutes. The fastest: around 2 hrs 35, on average around 2 hrs 50.

Mon train ayant eu près d’une heure de retard, il m’a attendue à la gare avec beaucoup de patience et de gentillesse, ce que j’ai particulièrement apprécié. Trajet très agréable également.
